September is National Preparedness Month: A Home Electrical Checklist
Hello neighbors. September is National Preparedness Month, and here in Tampa Bay, we take that seriously. We've spent the summer watching storms roll through, and hurricane season doesn't wind down until November. This is a good time to slow down and take stock of how prepared your home's electrical system actually is, not just for the next storm, but for everyday safety too.
This isn't about fear. It's about walking through your home with fresh eyes and catching the small things before they become bigger problems.
Start With Your Panel
Your electrical panel is the heart of your home's system, so it's the right place to start. Do you know how old it is? Has it ever tripped repeatedly or felt warm to the touch? Panels have a lifespan, and older ones may not have the capacity or safety features that newer homes come standard with.
If you don't know the age or condition of your panel, that's worth finding out. A quick inspection tells you where you stand.
Check Your Surge Protection
Tampa Bay sees more lightning than almost anywhere else in the country. If you don't already have whole-home surge protection installed at your panel, this is the month to consider it. A single device protects your AC system, appliances, and electronics from the surges that come through during every storm season, not just the big ones.
If you already have surge protection, take a look at the indicator light. Most units show a simple visual cue letting you know they're still active and doing their job.
Walk Through Your GFCI Outlets
GFCI outlets are the ones with the test and reset buttons, usually found in kitchens, bathrooms, garages, and outdoor spaces. Press the test button on each one. If it doesn't trip and reset properly, that outlet needs attention. These outlets are your first line of defense against electrical shock near water, so it's worth confirming they're actually working.
Think About Emergency Lighting
If the power goes out during a storm, do you have a reliable way to see? Battery-powered emergency lighting, especially in hallways and stairwells, makes a real difference during an outage. This is also a good time to check that any hardwired emergency lighting or exit fixtures are functioning properly.
Consider Your Generator Situation
If you own a portable generator, is it connected safely through a properly installed interlock device, or are you running extension cords through a window during outages? An interlock lets you power your home directly and safely without the risks that come from improvised setups.
If you don't have a generator at all, September is a good time to think through what an outage would actually look like for your household and whether backup power makes sense for you.
Look at Your Outdoor Outlets and Cords
After a summer of entertaining, cookouts, and pool days, take a walk around the outside of your home. Are your outdoor outlets covered and protected from weather? Are you still relying on extension cords that should have been replaced with permanent outlets months ago?
Putting It All Together
None of this requires a major renovation. Most of it is a checklist you can walk through in an afternoon, and anything that needs professional attention can usually be handled quickly once identified.
Preparedness isn't about doing everything at once. It's about knowing where you stand so you're not caught off guard later.
